Breakthrough Kent Denver

About Us

Breakthrough Kent Denver is part of a National Collaborative striving to address two core problems in the education crisis: unequal access to quality education for students and a shortage of qualified teachers. Breakthrough increases the high school graduation and the college matriculation rate of under-resourced students by implementing a six-year intensive after school and summer program that concentrates on both academic growth and social emotional health.

Breakthrough addresses the teacher shortage by training aspiring teachers through a rigorous and inspirational Teacher Training Program meant to ensure that these aspiring educators enter the classroom with the skills they need to succeed.

Giving Opportunities

Breakthrough has relied on our incredible donors since our inception in 1995. Because of their commitment, Breakthrough has served more than 2,500 students and 670 aspiring educators. There are many ways to support our motivated students and aspiring teachers!

Monetary Donations – Breakthrough provides programs to students and aspiring teachers at no cost and relies on monetary donations from individuals and Foundations. Every gift counts! Donations can be made by mail, in person, or on our website. Although Breakthrough shares the same 501c3 as Kent Denver School, all accounts and fundraising are separate from Kent Denver. Kent Denver School donates to Breakthrough by giving space as an in-kind donation but does not contribute financially to Breakthrough.

Gala Sponsorships – Each year, Breakthrough throws the Give Your Love to Breakthrough Gala where we raise a 1/3 of our budget! This year, the event takes place on Thursday, March 7th, 2019! We offer multiple packages for corporate sponsors and offer incredible exposure to our generous attendees!

Corporate Partnerships – Breakthrough partners with companies looking to see the impact of their partnership and gift. We can organize employee engagement activities and offer opportunities for your employees to meet the students they are assisting. Would you like to sponsor healthy lunches during the school year? Or pay sponsor housing for the aspiring teachers? Sponsorships can be designed to meet the needs of your company and culture!

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are integral to Breakthrough Kent Denver’s success. We have many opportunities to work directly with students, provide programming support, and/or volunteer with our annual Give Your Love to Breakthrough Gala. Volunteers that wish to commit more time to Breakthrough can join the Breakthrough Advisory Board.

Breakthrough also has many mutually beneficial relationships with companies looking to give their employees impactful volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Sarah Dutcher,

Community Relations Manager and Managing Director, Janus Henderson Foundation

Janus Henderson Investors believes in supporting innovative educational programs in our communities through the Janus Henderson Foundation. Breakthrough Kent Denver has a unique model that focuses on academic success for students as well as the professional development of the future workforce of teachers. This is a one-of-a-kind program because students come from various school districts and are provided academic coaching and personal growth opportunities to encourage empowerment. Breakthrough Kent Denver is a part the students’ lives for six years to ensure success.

For the past seven years 100% of Breakthrough seniors have graduated high school, and in 2018 92% matriculated into an institution of higher education. We are inspired by the program because it focuses on students in need of additional support to achieve academic success. 92% of their students are students of color, 84% qualify for free or reduced lunch, and 81% will be the first in their family to attend college.

Breakthrough continues to evolve, ensuring students have the opportunities and resources needed to continue on a pathway to college. A key focus of the program is the aspiring teachers – ensuring those teachers receive the coaching and training necessary to complete a successful first year in the classroom.

Breakthrough can’t do this alone. Breakthrough has many opportunities to work directly with students throughout the year. They are especially looking for volunteers from a diverse selection of professions to present varying career paths to the students.

With success come challenges; one of which being transportation. The program currently buses the students free of charge, but they pay a price to offer this service to students. They face difficulty in securing affordable and reliable housing for their aspiring teachers (Teaching Fellows) for the nine-week teacher training program.

Through our support, we have been able to help Breakthrough with some of the challenges they face as they grow the student and Teaching Fellows programs. Our partnership with Breakthrough is ensuring we are developing the future leaders of tomorrow by providing them the support they need today.
